Limited to 5,208 single malt whiskies
“Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging” is a single malt whisky distilled at Mars Shinshu distillery and matured on Yakushima, an island of world natural heritage located at sea about 60 km south-southwest of the Kagoshima prefecture. In this fourth installment, it is vatted primarily from malt barrels that have been aged for three to five years in bourbon barrels. Vanilla-like rich sweet aromas, fruit aromas reminiscent of bananas, and smoky flavors derived from peat make it an impressive whisky. Please enjoy malt whisky unique to Mars, which is made in a cool environment and aged in a wet climate with a lot of rain under the characteristic topography called “Alps at sea”.

Since the start of 2021, Honbo Sake Brewery has released two releases, “Single Malt Tsunuki Peated” and “The Lucky Cat Chocolate”, so this is the third work in this “Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging Bottled in 2021”. It’s pretty high-paced.

“Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging” has been released four times a year each since 2017. How the whisky which is produced after several years of aging by transporting the unblended whisky distilled at Mars Shinshu Distillery to Yakushima is changing year by year … It’s very interesting, isn’t it?

(1) Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging 2014

【Limited to 1,100 bottles】A single malt whisky distilled at Mars Shinshu distillery in 2014 and aged on Yakushima, an island of world natural heritage located at sea about 60 km south-southwest of the Kagoshima prefecture.
From Yakushima aging cellar, it was chosen 5 bourbon barrels and vatted. This is a rare single malt whisky that is embraced by the great nature of Yakushima, with a youthful yet powerful woody aroma and a sweet cinnamon-like flavor.

(2) Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging Bottled in 2019

【Limited to 1,760 bottles】 A single malt whisky distilled at Mars Shinshu distillery in 2014 and aged on Yakushima, an island of world natural heritage located at sea about 60 km south-southwest of the Kagoshima prefecture.
From among Yakushima aging cellars, vatting mainly from raw liquor aged in sherry barrels. This whisky has a peat-derived aroma and a dark, sweet aroma derived from sherry casks, such as bitter chocolate and coffee, creating a profound impression, and a well-balanced sweet and bitter taste that lingers long into the finish.

(3) Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging Bottled in 2020

【Limited to 3012 bottles】This single malt whisky is distilled at Mars-Shinshu Distillery and matured on Yakushima, an island of world natural heritage located about 60 km south-southwest of the Kagoshima prefecture. From among mars Yakushima aging cellars, vatting mainly from raw liquor aged in bourbon barrels. In the juicy and refreshing citrus fruit aroma and the hint of peat, sweet aromas such as vanilla custard cream gradually open up. This Whisky has a solid fruity taste and makes you feel mature in the south.

More about Honbo Shuzo Mars-Shinshu Distillery

The production (up to distillation) of “Single Malt Komagatake Yakushima Aging” is carried out at Honbo Shuzo’s “Mars Shinshu Distillery” in Nagano Prefecture. It started operations in 1985, and in 2020 it was renewed with the aim of renovating aging facilities and improving barrel storage facilities with an eye to increasing whisky production.

The renovation includes a new whisky distillery building where you can observe the whisky making process, a new spacious bar, and a new visitor building where you can purchase original whisky and goods. If you are a fan of Mars whisky, you should visit the distillery at least once.

The raw liquor, which has been distilled at Mars Shinshu Distillery, is transported to Yakushima aging cellar and stored in the special climate of Yakushima. Yakushima Aging Cellar was completed at the same time as mars Tsunuki Distillery, which was newly completed in 2016. In the past, Honbo Sake Brewery only made whisky at Mars Shinshu Distillery, but since 2016, it has been produced at two locations: Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) and Tsunuki (Kagoshima Prefecture). That’s way it is two distilleries with different environments and climates, this can be an interesting attempt to perform distillation in Shinshu and mature in Yakushima. In the future, various original whisky will be created by various attempts.
