3. About Yuza Distillery

From Yamagata, we bring you the highest-quality Japanese whisky, coveted around the world.

Kinryu Co., Ltd., which operates the Yuza Distillery, was founded in 1950 as a joint venture among nine sake brewers in Yamagata Prefecture. The company produces neutral spirits—commonly known as brewing alcohol—as well as Ko-rui shochu, which is made using a continuous still.
Although Kinryu is Yamagata’s only manufacturer specializing in shochu, in light of declining consumption of shochu and sake, as well as demographic challenges in Yamagata Prefecture, the company embarked on the whisky business as a new venture for the future.

This is the third whisky distillery in the Tohoku region, established by Kinryu Co., Ltd. in Yuza-machi, Yamagata Prefecture, in 2018.

Blessed with fresh, clear air and groundwater from the renowned Mount Chokai—selected as one of Japan’s “100 Best Water Towns”— Yuza-machi is an ideal location for producing the highest quality whisky.
The distillery uses pot stills manufactured by Forsyth, five fermentation tanks, and Canadian Douglas Fir. It also adopts Scottish methods for production and aging young whisky is never released directly from the cask, and the distillery focuses exclusively on producing single malt whisky —only those that have been aged to perfection.Precisely because we are a small distillery incapable of mass production, we spare no effort in every detail to craft the highest-quality whisky, infused with our unwavering dedication.

Yuza Distillery is a very small-scale whisky distillery, with a site area of approximately 4,550 square meters and a distillery floor area of approximately 620 square meters. While its exterior may appear small and charming, we aim to produce authentic, top-quality whisky.Using traditional methods while maintaining a commitment to the Japanese spirit of “monozukuri” (craftsmanship), we produce a Japanese whisky that is truly one of a kind in the world.
