This is the fourth in the K series and the second pure Japanese barley. This year’s edition will be the 2023 edition of the “Pot Still K Pure Japanese Barley First Edition”, which was released in June 2022. The product released by Shizuoka Distillery has been changed to be sold in 500ml bottles, and the 500ml version will be sold in a limited edition of 6,000 bottles, more than double the 2,500 bottles of the previous edition.
Ingredients are Japanese barley, non-peat type used. Bourbon barrels are used for aging.

2. Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shizuoka Pot Still K Pure Japanese Barley 2023 Edition
In June 2022, we released the first edition of the Pot Still series, Pot Still K Pure Japanese Barley, combining Distiller K and Japanese barley. This product is the 2023 edition created with that same combination. Each edition is an evolution of the series, allowing you to experience the “now” of Shizuoka Distillery.
This is the first release of this series in the newly adopted 500ml bottle from this fall. The sales volume will be limited to 6,000 bottles in Japan, more than double the 2,500 bottles of the previous series. The alcohol content will remain the same throughout the series, bottled at 55.5%, which provides a great drinking experience and flexibility in the way you enjoy it.
On the occasion of the release, Gaiaflow Shizuoka Distillery President, Taiko Nakamura, said, “We are proud to present the second pure Japanese barley from Pot Still K, the ultimate in ‘Japanese’ barley. This single malt whisky is brewed with 100% barley grown in Japan and distilled on Distiller K, which was built in Japan in the 1950s. The blend contains only ex-bourbon barrel aged whisky so that you can experience the delicate flavor characteristic of Japanese barley.
It would be interesting to drink it side by side with Pot Still W Pure Japanese Barley, which is also aged ex-bourbon barrels only, to feel the difference in distillation machines. 3. Distiller “K”
Shizuoka Distillery’s “K series” is made exclusively from the original distillate distilled on distiller “K” (photo on the right), which was relocated from the closed Karuizawa Distillery.
This distiller, built in Japan in the 1950s, features indirect heating distillation (steam is heated by passing through pipes at the bottom of the distiller) and long, thin line arms (pipes leading from the distiller to the cooling system).

4-1. Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shizuoka Pot Still K Pure Foreign Barley First Edition
“Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shizuoka Pot Still K Pure Foreign Barley First Edition” is the third in the K series from Gaiaflow Shizuoka Distillery.
Following in the footsteps of the first “Prologue K” and the second “Pot Still K Pure Japanese Barley First Edition” in the K series, the “K” series consists of the original spirit from distiller K.
This time, it is a single malt Japanese whisky made from 100% foreign barley. Non-peated and peated malts from Scotland are used to achieve a smokiness not found in Japanese barley.
Also, it is the first official release to use sherry casks.
4-2. Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shizuoka Pot Still K Pure Japanese Barley First Edition
After the prologue, this chapter finally begins! Following in the footsteps of Shizuoka Distillery’s first release, “Prologue K”, the “K” series consists of the original spirit from distiller K.
This is a special whisky made from 100% Japanese barley malt and aged for 3 to 5 years in the rich nature of the Shizuoka region.

(2). Japanese Whisky as an Education for Business
This is a book written by Mamoru Tsuchiya, a world-famous whisky critic and representative of the Whisky Culture Research Institute, titled “Japanese Whisky as a Culture that Works for Business” .
The book covers the basics of whisky, the introduction of whisky to Japan, the birth of Japanese whisky, advertising strategies and the rise of Japanese whisky, and the current rise of craft distilleries. This is a book that summarizes Japanese whisky in a very easy to understand way.
(3). Whisky and I (Masataka Taketsuru)
Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, devoted his life to brewing whisky in Japan. This is a revised and reprinted version of the autobiography of a man who simply loved whisky and talked about himself. The book vividly depicts the days when he went to Scotland alone to study as a young man and overcame many hardships to complete Japanese whisky, as well as his companion, Rita.
(4). A Letter of Challenge from a New Generation Distillery
Launching in 2019. With the world experiencing an unprecedented whisky boom, what were the managers of craft distilleries thinking and what were their thoughts as they took on the challenge of making whisky? This book tells the stories of 13 craft distillery owners, including Ichiro Hido of Venture Whisky, famous for his Ichirose Malt, who inspired the birth of craft distilleries in Japan.

This is the Japanese version of Whisky Risng, published in the US in 2016, with much updated content. Not only does it describe the history of Japanese whisky in detail, but it also includes data on all the distilleries in Japan, including the craft distilleries that have been founded in recent years. The book also includes descriptions of the legendary bottles that have been released, as well as information on bars where Japanese whisky can be found.
